1. The Integration of Two Key Issues: Air Pollution Control and Environmental Information Public DisclosureThe “China Air Pollution Map” is a public interest database designed to make information about air quality in the nation’s easily accessible to the public. The Phase I of the Map will cover 15 southern provinces and over 150 municipalities. By simply clicking on different map regions, website users will be able to investigate information on a region’s air quality, amount and sources of air emission, including information on enterprises and power plants that exceed emission standards.2. Regional Ranking System: Which region are the most polluted and who are the Worst Emitters?Website users will be able to view rankings of the levels of various air pollutants and gain a better understanding of the air quality in their own region. They may also view rankings of provinces and municipalities based on levels of industrial and residential emission. This cross-comparative view of environmental performance across regions will help users better understand what geographic regions and what problems ought to be prioritized in pollution prevention and remediation efforts.3. Positioning Polluting Enterprises: Can Public Pressure Change Their Ways? The air pollution database identifies over 4200 of polluting enterprises across China, among which large enterprises are no exception. There are also some large multinational corporations. We hope to partner with local environmental protection organizations in positioning these enterprises and power plants that are violating legal standards. We will pinpoint the location of these enterprises and sewage treatment facilities on our Pollution Map, enabling the public to understand the sources of environmental hazards and the responsible parties within their own communities.
